An Introduction to TRIZ

General Motivation

In today's business competition, innovation is a key factor for a company to be successful. A company needs to constantly and consistently improve its products and production process, and innovative in a never-ending manner.

Two type of projects allow a company to enforce its business:

  • Improvement type projects, that allow more predictable and risk-free incomes
  • Innovation projects, that bring to a real competitive advantage.
Improvement type projects are important for a company's everyday life and to ensure competitiveness in the short term, but innovation projects are essential in the long term for a company to survive in the world-wide, globalized market.

This situation is well depicted in the figure below:
Improvement vs Profitability

The blue curve represents the so-called "S-curve", showing the degree of improvement that a technical system (TS) shows over time. From its invention, a TS is improved to a stable version, then to maximum performance and efficiency, then to minimum production cost, until no further improvement is possible. At this level, the TS has reached its maturity.

The red curve shows how the profitability level changes during the evolution of the technical system. Profitability is negative or very low until the product comes to a stable version, because of high R&D costs. During the performance and efficiency improvement, profitability grows and reaches its maximum when costs have been minimized. From this point on, further attempts to improve the product will only cause a decline of its economic and societal value.

At this point, innovation becomes crucial, because it is the only way to push the technical system further. Innovation allows to make an "evolutionary jump" of the TS to a new technological level:
